Early Life and Career

Pat Spooner was born in London in 1910. She was the daughter of a doctor and a nurse, and she grew up in a comfortable and privileged environment. However, Spooner was also a strong-willed and independent woman, and she had a thirst for adventure. In the 1930s, she worked as a journalist and a photographer, and she also travelled extensively throughout Europe.

When World War II broke out in 1939, Spooner was quick to volunteer her services. She joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS),the women's branch of the British Army. Spooner was initially assigned to a clerical role, but she soon applied for a transfer to the SOE.

The Special Operations Executive

The SOE was a secret organisation that was established in 1940 to carry out sabotage and undercover operations behind enemy lines. The SOE recruited agents from all walks of life, including men and women, and from all over the world. Spooner was one of the first women to join the SOE, and she was quickly sent to France for training.

Spooner's training included learning how to use weapons, explosives, and sabotage techniques. She also learned how to speak French fluently and how to live and operate in a hostile environment. Spooner excelled in her training, and she was soon ready for her first mission.

Mission to France

In 1942, Spooner was sent to France as part of a team of SOE agents. Her mission was to establish contact with the French Resistance and to help them sabotage German targets. Spooner and her team parachuted into France and made their way to a safe house in Paris. From there, Spooner began to make contact with members of the Resistance.

Spooner's mission was dangerous, but she was determined to succeed. She worked tirelessly to establish a network of contacts and to gather intelligence on German activities. Spooner also helped to organise sabotage operations, which caused significant damage to German infrastructure and supplies.

Capture and Imprisonment

In 1943, Spooner was captured by the Gestapo. She was tortured and interrogated, but she refused to give up any information about her mission or her contacts. Spooner was eventually sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp, where she spent the rest of the war.

Spooner's experiences in Ravensbrück were horrific. She was subjected to starvation, forced labour, and medical experiments. However, she never gave up hope, and she continued to resist her captors in whatever way she could. In 1945, Ravensbrück was liberated by the Allied forces, and Spooner was finally free.

Post-War Life

After the war, Spooner returned to England and was awarded the MBE for her bravery and service. She continued to work for the SOE for a few years, but she eventually retired from the military. Spooner went on to have a successful career in business, and she also became a writer and a lecturer. She was a tireless advocate for women's rights and for the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by those who served in World War II.

Legacy

Lieutenant Colonel Pat Spooner MBE was a remarkable woman who made a significant contribution to the Allied victory in World War II. She was a brave and determined agent, and she never gave up hope, even when faced with the horrors of Ravensbrück concentration camp. Spooner's story is an inspiration to us all, and her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
