The XIXth International Congress on Ancient Bronzes was held in Athens, Greece, from May 22-26, 2018. It brought together scholars from around the world to discuss the latest research on ancient bronzes, including their production, use, and significance.

The Congress was organized by the National Archaeological Museum of Athens and the University of Athens. The scientific committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Dimitris Pandermalis, Director of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, and Prof. Dr. Eleni Konsolaki, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Athens.

The Congress was divided into four main themes:

  1. Production and technology of ancient bronzes
  2. Use and function of ancient bronzes
  3. Iconography and symbolism of ancient bronzes
  4. Conservation and restoration of ancient bronzes

Each theme was addressed by a series of keynote lectures and paper presentations. The Congress also included a number of workshops and demonstrations.

The Congress was a great success, with over 250 participants from 35 countries. It provided a unique opportunity for scholars to share their research and to learn from each other. The Congress also helped to raise awareness of the importance of ancient bronzes and the need to protect them.

Highlights of the Congress

Some of the highlights of the Congress included:

  • A keynote lecture by Prof. Dr. John Boardman, Emeritus Professor of Classical Art and Archaeology at the University of Oxford, on the origins and development of Greek bronze sculpture.
  • A paper presentation by Dr. Barbara Deppert-Lippitz, Director of the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum in Mainz, Germany, on the use of bronzes in Roman Gaul.
  • A workshop on the conservation and restoration of ancient bronzes, led by Dr. Maria Polyzou, Head of the Conservation Department at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
  • A demonstration of the production of ancient bronzes, using traditional techniques, by master bronze-smith Giannis Asimakopoulos.

The XIXth International Congress on Ancient Bronzes was a major event in the field of archaeology. It provided a valuable opportunity for scholars to share their research, to learn from each other, and to raise awareness of the importance of ancient bronzes.
