Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was an Irish poet and playwright who became one of the most famous playwrights in London during the late Victorian era. Wilde was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1854. He studied at Trinity College Dublin and then moved to London to study law. However, he soon abandoned his legal studies to pursue a career in writing.

Wilde's first major success was his play Lady Windermere's Fan, which was produced in 1892. The play was a huge hit, and it established Wilde as one of the most popular playwrights in London.

In 1895, Wilde published his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray. The novel was a critical and commercial success, and it remains one of Wilde's most famous works.

In 1897, Wilde was convicted of gross indecency for his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas. He was sentenced to two years in prison. After his release from prison, Wilde lived in exile in France, where he wrote his essay The Soul of Man Under Socialism.

Wilde died in Paris in 1900 at the age of 46. He is buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery.
