In the spring of 2019, I embarked on a year-long journey to see every bird species that occurs in the state of Maine. This was no small feat, as Maine is home to over 400 species of birds, including many that are rare or difficult to find. But I was determined to see them all, and I was eager to share my experiences with others.

I started my journey in April, with the arrival of the first spring migrants. I spent the next few months traveling all over the state, from the coastal islands to the northern forests and the mountains in between. I hiked through dense forests, paddled through remote lakes, and spent countless hours scanning the skies and marshes for birds. Along the way, I saw some amazing things.

I saw a pair of bald eagles soaring over a mountaintop, their wings spread wide. I saw a group of Atlantic puffins nesting on a rocky island, their bright orange beaks and feet contrasting with the dark gray of the rocks. I saw a family of moose grazing in a meadow, their massive antlers towering over me. And I saw a tiny ruby-throated hummingbird hovering over a flower, its wings beating so fast that they were almost invisible.

In all, I saw 354 species of birds during my Big Year. This included some of the most common birds in Maine, such as the American robin and the black-capped chickadee. But it also included some of the rarest birds in the state, such as the Bicknell's thrush and the boreal owl. I was fortunate to see many of these birds in their natural habitats, and I was able to capture some stunning photographs of them.

My Big Year was an amazing experience, and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to do it. I learned so much about the birds of Maine, and I made memories that will last a lifetime. I hope that my photographs will inspire others to appreciate the beauty of Maine's birdlife and to work to protect it.

Here are a few of my favorite photographs from my Big Year:
