Early Life

Gerda Weissmann was born in Bielsko, Poland, in 1924. She grew up in a loving and supportive family, but her happy childhood was cut short by the outbreak of World War II. In 1942, Gerda and her family were forced into the Bielsko ghetto.

Deportation and Concentration Camps

In 1944, Gerda and her family were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. They were separated upon arrival, and Gerda was sent to a slave labor camp. She endured unimaginable hardships, including starvation, beatings, and the loss of her parents and brother.

In 1945, Gerda was moved to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. She was liberated by British troops in April 1945, weighing only 68 pounds.

Liberation and New Life

After liberation, Gerda spent several months in a hospital recovering from her physical and emotional wounds. She eventually made her way to the United States, where she met and married Kurt Klein. Together, they had two children and dedicated their lives to helping other Holocaust survivors.
