In the annals of aviation history, few expeditions stand out with such daring and determination as Robert Mads Anderson's journey to the Arctic in an Antonov An-2 aircraft.

Anderson, a renowned Danish explorer and adventurer, embarked on this extraordinary mission in 1955. Driven by an insatiable thirst for discovery and a deep fascination with the uncharted regions of the globe, he set out to fly his small, single-engine aircraft over the frozen expanse of the Arctic Circle.

The Aircraft and the Crew

Anderson's choice of aircraft for this perilous journey was the venerable Antonov An-2, a Soviet-designed biplane known for its ruggedness, reliability, and ability to operate in challenging conditions.

This versatile aircraft, initially intended for agricultural purposes, had already proven its mettle in various military and civilian roles. Its sturdy construction, ample payload capacity, and short takeoff and landing capabilities made it ideally suited for Anderson's demanding expedition.

For this historic flight, Anderson assembled a small crew consisting of:

  • Sten Bruun, a skilled pilot and navigator
  • Erik Holst, a photographer and documentarian
  • Lars Hansen, a radio operator and meteorologist

The Journey Begins

On June 22, 1955, with the sun at its northernmost point, Anderson and his crew took off from Copenhagen, Denmark, embarking on their uncharted adventure.

The initial leg of the journey took them over the Norwegian Sea and the island of Jan Mayen. From there, they ventured northward, following the coastline of Greenland towards the vast expanse of pack ice that marked the edge of the Arctic Ocean.

Encountering the Arctic

As Anderson's Antonov approached the Arctic, the crew witnessed firsthand the harsh and unforgiving nature of this frozen realm. Massive icebergs towered over their aircraft, their jagged edges glistening in the sunlight.

In addition to the icy perils, the Arctic presented another formidable challenge: polar bears. These apex predators, with their keen sense of smell, were drawn to the aircraft's presence, forcing Anderson and his crew to remain vigilant against potential encounters.

Flying Over Uncharted Territory

Undeterred by the hazards that lay before them, Anderson and his crew continued their northward progress, venturing into uncharted territory previously unseen by human eyes.

Flying over the endless expanse of ice and snow, they collected valuable scientific data, documenting the region's geography
