Victoria Crosses On The Western Front April 1915 June 1916

The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest military decoration awarded for valour in the face of the enemy to members of the armed forces of the Commonwealth of Nations and the former British Empire. It was instituted in 1856 by Queen Victoria and has been awarded approximately 1,350 times.

During the First World War, the VC was awarded on numerous occasions to soldiers serving on the Western Front. One of the most famous VCs awarded during the Western Front campaign was to Captain John McCrae, the author of the poem "In Flanders Fields". McCrae was awarded the VC for his actions at the Second Battle of Ypres, where he led his men in a successful counter-attack against the Germans.
