The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest military decoration awarded for valour in the face of the enemy to members of the armed forces of the Commonwealth of Nations and the former British Empire. It was instituted in 1856 by Queen Victoria and has been awarded approximately 1,350 times.

During the First World War, the VC was awarded on numerous occasions to soldiers serving on the Western Front. In April 1915, the first VCs of the war were awarded to soldiers involved in the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. In the following months, VCs were awarded for actions at the Battle of Loos, the Battle of the Somme, and the Battle of Passchendaele.

One of the most famous VCs awarded during the Western Front campaign was to Captain John McCrae, the author of the poem "In Flanders Fields". McCrae was awarded the VC for his actions at the Second Battle of Ypres, where he led his men in a successful counter-attack against the Germans.

Another notable VC recipient was Sergeant Alvin York, who was awarded the VC for his actions at the Battle of the Argonne Forest. York was part of a small group of American soldiers who were surrounded by a much larger force of Germans. Despite being outnumbered, York and his men managed to kill or capture over 100 Germans.

The Victoria Cross is a symbol of courage and sacrifice, and the men who were awarded the VC during the Western Front campaign are remembered as some of the greatest heroes of the war.
