Early Life and Career

David Pecaut was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1925. His father, Fred Pecaut, was a successful businessman, and his mother, Marion, was an active community volunteer. David grew up in an environment where philanthropy and social responsibility were highly valued.

After graduating from Upper Canada College, David attended the University of Toronto, where he studied economics. Upon graduating, he joined his father's investment firm, Wood Gundy.

Philanthropic Endeavors

David Pecaut's philanthropic activities began in the 1960s when he became involved with the United Way of Canada. He served as the organization's president from 1969 to 1971, and his leadership helped to raise significant funds for social service agencies across the country.

In addition to his work with the United Way, David Pecaut supported numerous other charitable causes, including education, health care, and the arts. He was a major donor to the University of Toronto, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Royal Ontario Museum.

One of David Pecaut's most significant philanthropic initiatives was the establishment of the David and Joyce Pecaut Foundation in 1982. The foundation provides grants to organizations working in the areas of education, health care, and community development. To date, the foundation has awarded over $250 million in grants.

Social Change Advocate

In addition to his philanthropic work, David Pecaut was also a vocal advocate for social change. He was a strong supporter of the civil rights movement and the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa.

David Pecaut also played a key role in the establishment of the Toronto Arts Council in 1979. The council provides funding and support to arts organizations in the Toronto area.

Art Collector

David Pecaut was a passionate art collector, and his collection included works by some of the most acclaimed Canadian and international artists. He was particularly fond of Inuit art, and he donated many of his Inuit pieces to the Art Gallery of Ontario.

David and his wife Joyce had a personal art collection, with a focus on Canadian artists. They collected over 2,000 artworks in total.

Legacy

David Pecaut passed away in 2019 at the age of 94. He left behind a legacy of philanthropy, social change, and community development that continues to inspire others.
