In 1942, shortly after the United States entered World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which authorized the internment of Japanese Americans. Over 120,000 people of Japanese descent, two-thirds of whom were American citizens, were forced to leave their homes and businesses and were sent to internment camps scattered across the country.

Heart Mountain was one of ten internment camps located in the western United States. It was the third largest camp, with over 10,000 internees at its peak. The camp was located in a remote area of Wyoming, and the internees lived in barracks surrounded by barbed wire fences.

Despite the harsh conditions, the internees at Heart Mountain found ways to create a sense of community and hope. They built schools, churches, and hospitals, and they organized clubs and activities for children and adults.

One of the most popular activities at Heart Mountain was football. The internees formed a football team called the Eagles, and they quickly became a source of pride for the camp. The Eagles played against teams from other internment camps, and they even defeated a team from the University of Wyoming.

The Eagles' success on the football field was a symbol of the resilience and determination of the Japanese American internees. It was a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope.

The Eagles of Heart Mountain is a story that has been largely forgotten by history. However, it is a story that deserves to be told and remembered. It is a story of courage, resilience, and hope.

The Internment Camps

The internment camps were a dark chapter in American history. They were a violation of the civil rights of Japanese Americans, and they caused great suffering and hardship.

The camps were justified by the government on the grounds of national security. However, there was no evidence to support this claim. The vast majority of Japanese Americans were loyal to the United States, and they posed no threat to the country.

The internment camps were a shameful episode in American history. They are a reminder of the dangers of prejudice and discrimination.
